Geography at Warren Farm

At Warren Farm we aim to provide a curriculum that allows our children to be curious about the world and its population. We want them to learn about the different countries of the world and the people who live in them. They will also learn about the world’s resources and the natural and manmade features of our planet. We aim to prepare our pupils for their future place in the community as responsible and caring citizens.

Early Years

In Early Years understanding the world around us is an important element to the children’s learning. They learn about the environment and the natural world. We encourage the children to look for similarities and differences around them in the environments they experience, including the weather and countries of origin. 

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1 the children will be able to:

• Name and locate the seven continents of the world and the five oceans. 
• Name, locate and identify the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas.
• Compare similarities and differences between a small area of the U.K. and a small area in a contrasting non-European country.
• Identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in different parts of the world.
• Describe landscapes using basic geographical language.
• Use maps, atlases, globes and compass directions to identify the United Kingdom, its countries and other countries that the children have studied. 

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2 the children will be able to:

• Name and locate the world’s countries using maps to focus on Europe, North and South America.
• Name and locates the cities and counties of the United Kingdom, identifying human and physical characteristics and land use patterns.
• Identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, the Equator, the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, The Arctic and Antarctic circles and the time zones of the world.
• Compare and contrast a region of the United Kingdom, a region of a European country and a region of North or South America.
• Describe and understand key aspects of physical geography, including climate zones, rivers, the water cycle, mountains, earthquakes and volcanoes.
• Describe and understand key aspects of human geography including land use, trade links and the distribution of natural resources.
• Use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and geographical features.
• Use compass points and grid references.
• Carry out fieldwork.
